At sea level we start a journey that will take us to the highest rangelands of Galicia (Northwestern Spain) following the Eucalyptus trees. This is the first installment of a virtual trip on eucalypt cultivation from USDA zone 10a to USDA zone 7a for the humid temperate regions of Northern Spain and Portugal after some 100 years of varied trials. We will travel from common to rare species, from timber growing to ornamental growing, and from less cold hardy to more cold hardy trees, observing different landscapes and microclimates. A journey that hopefully will be of some assistance to those cultivating these trees anywhere in the world in similar climatic conditions. And here we start near the ocean with Ferdinand von Mueller's Prince of Eucalypts: Eucalyptus globulus. |
